ACC: Adaptive Cruise Control
ABRP: A better route planner - one of the many apps for planning journeys and EV charging (see Charging Your EV page)
AC: Alternating Current
AFC: Alternative Fuel Vehicle
BEV: Battery Electric Vehicle - a fully electric car
BMS: Battery Management System
CCS: Combined Charging System
CHAdeMO: an abbreviation of "CHArge de MOve", equivalent to "move using charge" or "move by charge" or "charge 'n' go", a reference to the fact that it's a fast charger.
Charge Point: the electric equivalent to a petrol pump - that enables you to charge your car battery
CPO: Charge Point Owner
DC: Direct current
EDS: Electric Drive System
EV: Electric Vehicle
FCV: Fuel Cell Vehicle
GOM: Guess-o-meter - the display giving you the estimated amount of miles left in your battery
HEV: Hybrid Electric Vehicle - a vehicle powered by both electricity and petrol
Hydrogen Fuel Cell: a device in which a chemical reactions occurs between hydrogen and oxygen to creat electricity. The only thing that comes out of the exhaust exhaust system is steam.
HFCV: a vehicle that is fuelled by Hydrogen cells
Hyper-miling: the way to drive so that you obtain the greatest range of an EV (or the best mpg from an ICE.)
HV: high voltage
ICE: Internal Combustion Engine - if there is one parked on an EV charge point that you want to use, you've been ICE'd.
KERS: A kinetic energy recovery system is an automotive system for recovering a moving vehicle's kinetic energy under breaking. The recovered energy is stored in a high voltage battery for later use under acceleration.
kWh: Kilowatt Hour (literally 1,000 watts per hour). If your car does 4 miles per kilowatt hour, 10 kWh's of charge will take you 40 miles.
LCV: Low Carbon Vehicle
LKA: Lane Keep Assist (warning system to keep an EV in its lane without driver input)
MHEV: Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle - the smallest electric boost to an electric engine - probably only 48 volts.
Ohme: not an acronym, but the name of a charge point and cable manufacturer
OLEV: the government's Office for Low Emission Vehicles
OVMS: Open Vehicle Management System
PAYG: Pay As You Go
PHEV: Plug in hybrid electric - also chargeable from the mains
PV: Photovoltaic - refers to solar panel cell - it is an electronic device that catches sunlight and turns it directly into electricity.
Range Anxiety: the fear of running out of charge before reaching a working charge point or your destination
RFID: Radio Frequency IDentification (usually refers to a card needed to pay at a chargepoint, rather than a charge card)
SAS: Speed Assist System
SCS: Stability Control System
SMMT: Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders - they produce stats every month re sales of all types and marques of cars.
SOC: State of Charge - the remaining battery capacity shown as a percentage
TCS: Traction Control System
TPMS: Tyre Pressure Monitoring System
TSO: Transmission System Operator
