ACC: Adaptive Cruise Control

ABRP: A better route planner - one of the many apps for planning journeys and EV charging (see Charging Your EV page)

AC: Alternating Current

AFC: Alternative Fuel Vehicle

BEV: Battery Electric Vehicle - a fully electric car

BMS: Battery Management System

​CCS: Combined Charging System

CHAdeMO: an abbreviation of "CHArge de MOve", equivalent to "move using charge" or "move by charge" or "charge 'n' go", a reference to the fact that it's a fast charger.

Charge Point: the electric equivalent to a petrol pump - that enables you to charge your car battery

CPO: Charge Point Owner

DC: Direct current

EDS: Electric Drive System

EV: Electric Vehicle

FCV: Fuel Cell Vehicle

GOM: Guess-o-meter - the display giving you the estimated amount of miles left in your battery

HEV: Hybrid Electric Vehicle - a vehicle powered by both electricity and petrol

Hydrogen Fuel Cell: a device in which a chemical reactions occurs between hydrogen and oxygen to creat electricity.  The only thing that comes out of the exhaust exhaust system is steam. 

HFCV: a vehicle that is fuelled by Hydrogen cells

Hyper-miling: the way to drive so that you obtain the greatest range of an EV (or the best mpg from an ICE.)

HV: high voltage


ICE: Internal Combustion Engine - if there is one parked on an EV charge point that you want to use, you've been ICE'd.

KERS: A kinetic energy recovery system is an automotive system for recovering a moving vehicle's kinetic energy under breaking. The recovered energy is stored in a high voltage battery for later use under acceleration.

kWh: Kilowatt Hour (literally 1,000 watts per hour).  If your car does 4 miles per kilowatt hour, 10 kWh's of charge will take you 40 miles.

​LCV: Low Carbon Vehicle

LKA: Lane Keep Assist (warning system to keep an EV in its lane without driver input)

MHEV: Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle - the smallest electric boost to an electric engine - probably only 48 volts.

Ohme: not an acronym, but the name of a charge point and cable manufacturer

OLEV: the government's Office for Low Emission Vehicles

OVMS: Open Vehicle Management System

PAYG: Pay As You Go 

PHEV: Plug in hybrid electric - also chargeable from the mains

PV: Photovoltaic - refers to solar panel cell - it is an electronic device that catches sunlight and turns it directly into electricity.

​Range Anxiety: the fear of running out of charge before reaching a working charge point or your destination

RFID: Radio Frequency IDentification (usually refers to a card needed to pay at a chargepoint, rather than a charge card)

SAS: Speed Assist System

SCS: Stability Control System


SMMT: Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders - they produce stats every month re sales of all types and marques of cars.

SOC: State of Charge - the remaining battery capacity shown as a percentage

TCS: Traction Control System

​TPMS: Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

​TSO: Transmission System Operator

V2G: Vehicle to Grid - technology that allows energy from an EV to be taken back into the grid

ZEV: Zero Emission Vehicle
